What Happens When Hail Hits Your Roof?

Storm and Hail Damage
Spring and summer are the seasons with the highest likelihood of hail. From past experience, you probably know by now that hail comes in all sizes, from small pieces, to large ones. And you also know that hail comes down with a lot of speed, hitting everything in its way indiscriminately. The roof of your house usually bears the brunt of each hailstorm. It's important to have an established Crystal Lake roofing company ready to call as needed.

And it is important to know what happens up there in order to understand why a roof inspection after each major hailstorm is mandatory.

1. The Shingles/ Sheets
Whether you have asphalt or wooden shingles or a modern roof made of metal sheets, they are equally vulnerable to hail. Hail can remove the protective coating from asphalt shingles and splinter wood. It can also cause dents in metal sheets, just like it does in the hood of your car.

2. The Gutters
Gutters can be blocked by hail. Or, the force of the impact can twist and even puncture them. Each of these problems leads to one major issue: rainwater no longer drains properly from the roof and it ends up pooling up there. Combined with damaged shingles, a major hailstorm is the perfect recipe for starting a leak inside your house.

3. The Sidings
Sidings seal the area between the edge of the roof and the walls and for various elements installed on the roof, like a TV antenna or a skylight. After being mercilessly hit by hail during a storm, sidings can become deformed. You can easily see the dents and misshapen areas around the edges of the roof from the ground. Once you note them, you can be sure that hail caused further damage to the rest of the roof.
