A roof drip edge is the component installed for
protecting the eaves, the gable end and all the other parts of the roof edge
against water damage. Drip edges are similar to the flashing used in other roof
areas – they consist of stripes of rust-proof, non-corrosive material, usually
of metal and they are installed to protect the parts of the roof that are
sensitive to water damage.
Drip edges are of special importance in the
case of shingle roofs – without a properly installed edge by roof repair Algonquin contractors, water can and will
seep underneath the topmost layer of the roof, damaging the deeper layers
usually made from wood. Without drip edges, the rain water and the melted snow
might not run directly into the gutters, but it might spread on top of the roof
or inside the roofing substrate. The damage caused by not having a proper roof
drip edge can range from short-term staining that can dry and disappear soon
after the drip edge is installed to very serious, long-term damage of the
roof’s fascia board as well as in the roof deck. If the water spends a long
time in places where it shouldn’t have reached into, the damage can affect the
trusses and the joists and it may lead to the appearance of leaks inside the
home as well.
