How to Tell Where the Origin of a Leak Is

roofing contractors help find roof leak source

Roof leaks are nasty enemies – most of them start small, in the form of tiny damp spots, but those spots can quickly turn into a huge disaster. Given the insidious nature of the issue, finding the source of the leak and fixing the issue is essential. Here are some tips to find the origin of the leak before it turns into a disaster:

-          Check the attic floor – the most obvious sign of a roof leak is damp patches or ponds of water on the attic floor. If you find such signs of excess moisture, the leak is likely to be right above the damp patch or pond;

-          Look up at the roof from the attic – the hole or crack through which the water came in will let light through as well, so if you stand in your attic and look up, you will see the sky through the roof in the spot where the leak is located;

-          Check the sensitive roof areas – wherever two roof sections are joined and form valleys, wherever flashing is installed to strengthen the roof at endings or around openings, water has an easier way in, so check all these areas for cracks, holes, punctures and other forms of damage;

-          Check the rest of the roof surface, too – a leak can be caused by a cracked or displaced tiles or by shingles that have been moved by wind, so check the entire roof surface, too.  The Algonquin roofing contractors are really experienced in finding where the leak is coming from, so don't hesitate to call them immediately for help.
