Summer comes with more outdoor fun than any other season, but it also comes with something else: devastating storms. Most of these extreme weather events involve not only rain and, occasionally, hail, but also high winds, all the associated phenomena being potentially damaging for roofs. Here is how summer storms can damage your roof:
- Wind damage – fast winds can take the covering elements off your roof and they can also lift the underlayment and take off the adhesive layers. If you have a tile roof, you are likely to have individual tiles damaged, while the roofs made from panels are likely to sustain more severe damage;
- Hail damage – hailstones can cause mechanical damage to roofing components, the most common forms being dents and punctures in membrane roofs, cracks in the components of tile roofs, removed surface granules on shingle roofs;
- Water damage – most storms are accompanied by heavy rain as well. Excessive amounts of water can quickly enlarge the smallest holes and punctures on the roof, causing severe leaks and they can also damage the gutters, causing clogs in the pipes and weighing heavily on both the gutters and the downspouts. Heavy raining can also damage the flashing stripes on the roof, making the structure vulnerable and also causing leaks to appear.
It's best to schedule regular inspections with Algonquin roofers to avoid major damage repair costs, and to keep your home protected.
