Tips for Keeping Your Roof Cool During Summer

The roof is the topmost layer on any building, therefore the layer that is the first to come into contact with solar heat and the largest surface through which that heat can enter the building. This also means that lowering the capacity of the roof to absorb and to transfer heat will also lower the amount of heat that you will need to eliminate to have a comfortably cool home – here are some of the best methods to prevent your roof from heating up:

-          Use light colored roofing materials – dark colors absorb heat, while light colors reflect it, so the lighter the color of your roof, the smaller the amount of heat that it will absorb. Beige, light brown, cream, white, light grey, light green or light blue are great hues for the purpose and you can also use them to confer your home a stunning, but stylish appearance;

-          Ensure proper ventilation – properly selected and installed roof vents will ensure that hot air will not be trapped in your attic. Make sure that you have a suitably sized vent at the bottom of the roof and another one right under the ridge – the two openings will ensure the proper movement of air even in the hottest period of the year and will lower the temperature of your roof;

-          Insulate – proper insulation added under the roof is another great way to prevent the penetration of heat underneath the roof.
