Understanding Your Roofing System

Roofing Tips Understanding Roofing System
Maybe you don’t realize it yet, but any roof is a complex system and an important part of any construction. Generally, when you look at a roof, you only see the shingles, not the roof itself.

Let’s take a closer look at the anatomy of your entire roof.

1.       The main structure of the roof is the roof deck together with the roof rafters, also called the roof skeleton. Usually, this is a solid and stable foundation and support for shingles.

2.       On top of the roof deck is located the underlayment, which basically is a sub-roof. This part of the roof protects the wood from rotting, moisture and ice damages. Usually, it is made from synthetic materials. The shingles are not waterproof either but they allow the water to drain from the roof.

3.       On the side of every roof you will find eavestroughs, often known as gutters, which are waste collecting channels. But besides these gutters, under the eaves, there are also some areas that let the airflow to circulate, named soffits.

4.       Flashings are metal pieces fixed around the vertical wall joints, even around the chimney. Flashings usually allow that two different materials expand and are designed to prevent water infiltrate

5.       Shingles are the roof covers, made of overlapping elements. They come in different shapes and materials, such as wood, metal, plastic ore flagstone. The most used shingles are ceramic tiles. Usually, the shingles are the first that need repairs or even shingle replacements by crystal lake roofing experts.
