Roof flashing – the stripes of
material used on roofs where two roof areas join or around openings with the
purpose of waterproofing and reinforcing those areas – is made from strong and
durable materials, but it is also a roof component that is more sensitive to
impact and other forms of damage than contiguous roof parts. Damaged flashing
no longer protects the joints and no longer seals roof openings, therefore any
fault of the flashing needs to be addressed in a timely manner. Here is what to
expect when you call a roofer to remedy the problem:
-
Inspection – the roofer
will first go up on the roof to check the flashing and to confirm it is,
indeed, the source of the leak. The inspection will also reveal the extent and
type of the damage;
-
Choosing the repair
approach – your Algonquin roofers will either repair the existing flashing or he will
remove and replace it;
-
Repair – small holes or
the spots caused by corrosion are easy to repair – your roofer will clean the
damaged area, then he will patch up the flashing with the same material as the
material of the flashing;
-
Replacement – if the
damage is more extensive, the flashing is cracked or completely corroded, your
roofer will probably decide to replace it. He will remove the old, damaged
flashing stripe, probably along with a few rows of shingles around the damaged
area, then he will prepare the area, reinstall the shingles and install the new
flashing stripe as well.
