Falling branches are a major cause
of roof damage – large trees might keep your yard shady and cool, but large
trees are also old trees, with branches that break easily, especially in windy
areas. However, there is no reason why you could not enjoy the shade of your
trees as well as the protection provided by your roof – here is how to prune
your trees to make them stronger and safer for the roof underneath.
The most important thing is to
Inspect the tree and to trim it regularly. It doesn’t take very long for a
large branch to dry out, so inspect the overhanging parts of your tree every
month or so. You can do it from the ground, from the attic or from the roof,
the important thing is to be thorough. If you identify any branches that are
right above the roof or rub against it and can cause problems, go up on the
roof or climb on the tree to trim the branch, but never forget to use proper
safety equipment, including non-slip boots, harnesses and anchors like the trained professional Algonquin roofing contractors do. Make sure
the tree debris resulting from the trimming process is cleared away, too and
check your gutters and downspouts for any debris that has accumulated during
the trimming.
